Prepping For Spring: Inside Your Home Woman Window imageWith spring just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about freshening up your home and getting rid of clutter, dirt and any other accumulated messes. We have a few ideas to help you get a head start on the spring season.

Furnace & Carpet Cleaning

Let’s start with the doozy of all your spring maintenance tasks. Throughout the winter, all that dust and gook that was dragged into your home collects in your carpets and rugs, and gets circulated in the air by your furnace. It doesn’t matter how often you change your filter, somehow that dust still gets into the air, and if you have allergies in your home, you’ll definitely feel it.

There are a wide variety of professional furnace and carpet cleaning companies to choose from. And the good news is most of them offer a package deal if you hire them to do both jobs.

Muddy winter boots, wet snow, and who-knows-what-else can get trapped in the fibres of your interior and exterior doormats. This is the perfect opportunity to get new, clean mats and freshen up the look of your home’s entrances.

Wash Windows & Clean Window Treatments

If you can hardly see through your windows this spring, you’re not alone. Chances are they’re covered in baked-on dust, inside and out. Take down your draperies and have them dry cleaned or laundered to freshen them up (this also reduces the dust lingering in the air).

While they're away, take the opportunity to clean up those windows. It's best to hire a window cleaning company for this task. You won't have to hoist yourself up on a ladder with a bucket, and you’ll end up with a professionally clean finish.

Organize Your Home Office

If you have an office in your home, spring is the perfect time to go through old papers and shred what isn’t needed. Create new filing systems if necessary, and go through your computer to delete unneeded files and programs. Reconfigure your layout and maybe change up some artwork or décor for a fresh perspective while you work.

Dust Everything

There's likely a layer of dusty goodness lying on top of everything right about now. Check unseen surfaces such as the tops of cabinets, light fixtures, and other high-up places. Pull appliances out and dust behind them. You may not see it, but if you know it’s clean you’ll certainly feel better.

Change Up Your Linens

It’s time to take that heavy duvet off the bed and replace it with a summer-weight quilt, or a few layers of fleece blankets with lighter woven ones to adjust to the varying temperatures during springtime. Consider getting new towels for the bathrooms, too; a fresh look is always invigorating.

The best way to inject spring into your home is to grab a bouquet of fresh spring flowers to put on display. There's nothing better than pretty plants to breathe life into a tired home.

Declutter & Donate Or Sell

Go through all of your closets and storage areas, and remove everything you don’t absolutely need. A good rule of thumb is that if you haven’t used it since the last time you decluttered, get rid of it. Use storage bins to categorize your items as “sell”, “donate”, or “trash” to help you get rid of items the right way.

Start Your Herbs

Seeds need about 6-8 weeks indoors to germinate before they can be transferred outside. Now is the time to plant your new green babies for a healthy crop of herbs this summer. Remember to ensure any potential overnight frost has passed before moving your herb seedlings outdoors, otherwise your efforts will be futile.

Change Up Décor

This one is completely up to you how far you take it. In our recent post, 9 Fresh Spring Décor Trends, we give you some trendy ideas that can freshen up the look in your home for the new spring season. Do a handful of small things for a little touch of change, or perhaps a full redecoration if you're simply tired of the current look.

Now is the perfect time to spring ahead and prepare your home for the warmer weather. Tackle the list one task at a time, and by the time spring arrives, both you and your home will feel much lighter.
