Part of the excitement in building your own custom home is the potential for unique and personalized spaces that are built just for you. Things like your dream backyard deck with built-in outdoor kitchen, maybe with a stone pizza oven, a fully equipped workshop in your triple-car garage, or the best thing yet — an epic sports-themed man cave in your wide-open basement space.
Let’s explore what we can do to create the ultimate sports arena in your own home.
Built-Ins
When you build a custom home, you can have your builder create and construct some of those larger items for your man cave so you don’t have to do so much of the work when you move in. Things like built-in surround sound and cabinetry to hold your electronic devices and massive television are just the beginning. We can create an entire experience if you do a little planning before your new home is designed.
Quench Your Thirst
A bar is essential. What is a sporting event without the bar? Depending on how far you want to take it, a secondary kitchen can be designed for your space complete with sink, refrigerator, wine/beer chiller inset into the countertop, and a beautiful tall bar perfect for comfortable stools.
Tip: design the sitting bar a step up from your main gathering area, facing the television. That way no one’s view is obscured between those sitting at the bar and those on the seating below.
Near your bar/kitchen could be your modern wine room. This cellar could be designed as a separate room off your bar area and include its own climate control. You might just wind up becoming a collector.
Sit Back and Relax
Seating is kind of important in a sports-themed space. Your friends will thank you in second overtime if they're still comfortable, drinks in hand. Install a row or two of comfortable reclining chairs facing the television, preferably with the back row a step higher for better viewing. Build in side tables for convenient drink and snack storage so you don’t miss a single minute of action.
Keep Score
Keeping score is important in your sports space. Have you considered adding a man cave score ticker above your TV? These fantastic pieces of equipment feed you live score updates, and even Twitter feeds if you so choose. There are plenty of styles and sizes to choose from, and they can be installed for you during construction so they’re wired in the right way.
Show Off a Little
What about your memorabilia? You must show it off, but in a way that it won’t degrade or damage it. Your builder can design custom cabinetry to display your favourite items — jerseys can be displayed in special pre-installed wall cabinets complete with glass doors. Other items can be showcased in custom sized shelving and glass cases designed specifically for your items, including lighting for each item. Consider a full-height glass display for more elaborate collections, complete with eyeball spots to highlight your favourite pieces.
Open shelving can be installed for those items you want to touch and feel regularly. A private, hidden cubby can also be designed to hide away those investment pieces so only you know they’re there. Specialty woodwork for a hanging display can also be crafted for you. This is ideal for unique items such as baseball bat or hockey stick collections.
Take a Swing
Is golf your favourite sport? Build in a golf drive simulator so you’ll never have to slice that shot ever again. Perhaps you can even have a putting green installed to polish your short game, if you have the space. Practice all year long in your own home, and your friends will be impressed with your improvements come spring.
Touch-Down Touch-Ups
We can’t forget about the décor. The flooring, ceiling finish and style, cabinetry, lighting, and other design items can be crafted to incorporate your overall design. Choose to work in your favourite team’s colours, or simply design the style of your space to be uniquely you.
Your man cave is a space to express your true, sports loving self. Let us not only design a space to show off your wicked collections but your deep, undying love for your favourite teams.
