When it comes to home décor, every homeowner has their own tastes. But the last thing you want to happen is for your decor to be out of style. You want your home to be elegant and charming, but you may not know where to begin making those intimate touches to create a truly unique, up-to-date space.
Here are a few of the current and upcoming trends you could consider for your home.
Wood-Clad Accent Wall
A feature wall clad in wood can add warmth and charm to any room. We aren’t talking about the wood paneling homeowners went crazy with in the 1960’s and 70’s; we mean a gorgeous wall of reclaimed barn wood or a stylish hardwood meant for the floor. By choosing the right style, colour, and/or grain of wood for your wall, you can quite simply create a room fit for a magazine cover.
Do you have a niche in a wall, a small space that could be beautiful if dressed in wood? Cover an entire wall in wood for a special visual feature in the room.
Additionally, tray ceilings create the perfect canvas for a wood ceiling. Adding warmth to the room in an unexpected manner such as this is sure to add the upscale charm you are looking for.
Class Is In the Details
By being affordable to the masses, Ikea has made a huge impact on the design of today’s home décor. But because of this, every new home looks the same. So, if not in your furniture, you can make your home unique and elegant by focusing on the details in your upholstery.
Contrasting patterns are a great way to add visual interest and class to your home décor. A chair with a solid base colour can have a contrasting cushion. An elegant patterned cushion will take the sophisticated look even further.
Tufted and studded features are a way of adding an upscale comfortable look to your home. A tufted headboard in your bedroom will create a focal point in addition to adding elegance to the space. Tufted or studded chairs are also a great accent to a clean design sofa.
Drop cloth slipcovers are a classy design for any chair upholstery. This tailored, refined style can fit both contemporary and traditional home décor styles. Select solid fabrics and add a simple contrasting band around the bottom edge for a clean, cultured design.
Jewel Tones
Bright, vibrant jewel tones are the newest trend in home décor for 2017. By designing your décor around one select feature colour, such as emerald green for example, you can add an exciting pop of colour into your home without sacrificing sophistication.
If you are more reserved in your design, use neutral tones or brushed gold in your furniture and upholstery, applying your selected jewel tone in featured places such as accent pillows, artwork, window fabrics, or tabletop displays.
If you are comfortable with more bold statements, choose a feature piece of furniture to don your jewel colour such as a sofa, or high-back chairs. Model the rest of your home décor around this colour by contrasting with neutral or complementary tones.
Unexpectedly, Terra Cotta
In contrast to the vibrant feel that jewel tones offer, natural textures such as terra cotta are also expected to be a popular trend in home décor. In the 1980’s, terra cotta was used a lot as border tiles, but that craze is long gone. Instead, this natural product is now seen more commonly as fireplace surrounds, feature walls, and even as flooring. Combined with other natural textures and fibres, this product creates a very warm feel to any space.
Cork
In the early 2000s, cork flooring became a popular choice for endless kitchens and exercise rooms. In 2017, however, cork will be used more commonly as a full feature wall in rooms such as a home office, feature wall in kitchens, or kids’ bedrooms. This natural texture will bring functionality to your space as it can be used as an active note or artboard, but the look will also add warmth to your design.
As you can see, home décor trends are moving into unchartered territory for 2017. Interior designs will be a bit experimental, and we hope this list helps you find your unique style while trying a few new things.
Do you have a room design that you are proud of? We’d love to see it!
